About Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week
16-22 September is Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week
Across the globe, the week will be marked with various educational, fundraising and advocacy efforts all designed to raise awareness about mitochondrial disease.
Background
Mitochondrial disease is not as rare as you might imagine. There are more than several hundred variations of the disease, each with their own set of symptoms and challenges.
Mitochondrial disease can affect any family at any time. It does not distinguish between race and gender. In order to raise awareness on a global scale, members from the leading mitochondrial disease foundations in their respective countries gathered and collaborated to participate in Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week around the world.
Rather than have various weeks of commemoration scattered across the calendar, they determined that the third week in the month of September would be designated to raise awareness on a global scale
